Historic Homestead – Melvy's Wharf- circa 1867
-3 hour Cruise including lunch and guided tour
The first track that reached the lower Hawkesbury River from Sydney actually cut through from Berowra down to Peats Bight, located about 20 minutes up river from the current road bridges at Brooklyn.
Where the track met the river was a flourishing settlement that included a school and a church, hire boats, holiday cottages, and, of course, a shop, known as the trading post. Today this section of the river is even more isolated than Spencer, and the only access to it is by water.
This cruise offers a unique visit to a homestead not open to the general public.
Melvy's Wharf is one of the few large properties left on the lower Hawkesbury River, and has been restored to its former glory by current owners Paul and Wendy Pigneguy.
Boasting a rich and varied history, Melvy's Wharf was the original Trading Post for the area, run by Italian sea captain Peter Melvey.
Enjoy lunch on the verandah followed by an exclusive tour of the property. Hear about the illegal liquor still set up in the 1930's which destroyed half the house!
Discover the history of the church and school on nearby Bar Island, and cruise past the famous Peats Bite Restaurant at the entrance to Berowra Waters.
